Self-care is selfish, and that’s good
Is self-care selfish? “Selfish” means “lack of consideration for others.” But if we don’t take care of ourselves, we can’t take care of others. Self-care doesn’t have to mean candlelit bubble baths. In fact, well-being doesn’t have to take any extra time at all. Here are 3 ways to mindfully multitask for a healthier body, mind, and spirit.
- Stand up every 30 minutes. Just standing up for a couple of seconds will wake up your metabolism and get everything moving. Even better if you can walk down the hall and back. I used to batch my tasks, so when I stood up I would get some water, go to the bathroom, get papers off the printer, go to the mailbox, etc. Now I deliberately do one thing, sit down for another 30 minutes, then stand up to do another one.
- Celebrate your acomplishments. When you complete a big project and hit “send,” what do you do next? Check your email? Look at your to-do list? One of the reasons we feel burned out is we don’t feel like we ever finish anything. Whenever we finish a big project, we should celebrate! That tells our minds that we acocmplished something. Jump up, raise your arms, and signal you made a touchdown!
- Sing or dance–while you’re driving. Create a playlist with your favorite music. Sing out or “dance” by rocking out in your seat. Find upbeat songs that make you feel good. Driving the kids? Get them singing too.
