Don’t train–facilitate
Whatever I’m teaching–HR compliance, well-being, presentation skills–I facilitate. Literally “to make something easier,” that’s what we all should be doing for the people who hear us, no matter what our topic.
Facilitation happens a lot of different ways. One way is to engage not only people’s minds, but their bodies. I’m working on a respectful workspace/preventing harassment course right now that includes large group exercises, quizzes, small group activities, video case studies, memorable stories, time for reflection, and a self-assessment based on Kirkpatrick’s four levels of evaluation– all in two hours.
I’ll be facilitating a 7-hour zoom course on my process for UH Outreach College August 10 and 12 if you want to learn and practice how to use these techniques in your own sessions. Here’s what Carrie Miyashiro, a marketing manager, said about the last course:
“Makana’s class, “The 4 Steps to Effective Business Presentations,” completely shifted my presentation paradigm. I’ve delivered many presentations in my career but always felt something was missing. From Makana, I learned how to harness all my faculties to create and conduct presentations that light a spark and have audiences caring about the topic. I highly recommend Makana if you want to transform your presentations from staid to engaging and memorable.”
